Our God - Healer

"Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”

Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared."

Matthew 8:1-3

[This is the 7th message of this series]

Continuing in this series of lessons, we will look at an overlooked quality of Our God.

Healing

When we aren't feeling well we tend to take medicine for it or call our general practitioner or someone we trust that can help us.

After so many years, and with advances in medical science, we have never really thought of, knew or have forgotten that Our God is a God who heals.

What is ironic is that some people believe that when someone gets sick, that it is God's will.

Nothing in Scriptures tells us this is true. Not sure where this came from. But what we do see if we ever do read the bible is that Our God desires that we are healed and whole.

Fallen World

You see the world we live in is a broken one. We all live in a fallen world. People can and do get sick. But this is not God's will.

Our God is a healing God. God's will is to heal. The bible says that this is the confidence that we have when we approach Him, if we pray according to 'His will', then God will hear us. (1 John 5:14).

The question is not whether He is willing to heal, He is willing!

The question is that do we approach God with the knowledge and the confidence, and do we even ask or pray for healing? (And that do we even know that He heals?)

Medicine

God allows us to go to doctors, and so many doctors  believe in God themselves. Physicians treat our sicknesses and they cure our illnesses. This is well and good. This is God's will.

But let us not forget that Our God is the Great Physician, He is willing and He is able to heal.

Complete Healing

Psalm 147:3

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

One of the first uses of the term 'broken heart' is from Scriptures. The psalmist wrote and sang lyrics containing this word to the Lord -- that God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds; healing their pain and comforting their sorrow.

When God heals, it is total and complete. He puts the broken pieces together as if nothing happened. He heals and makes us whole again. And He adds no trouble to it.

God Completes Us

The psalmist sings...

"Whom have I in heaven but You? On earth there is none I desire besides You.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
Psalm 73:25-26

We live our lives looking for love and joy in all the wrong places. And thus we can't find what we are looking for. Those of us who have reached what we were dreaming for eventually found out that with everything that we have, we still feel something is missing. And there is -- God. Most of us force God out of our lives only to realize that whatever we do and accomplish, we are still incomplete. Because God is that missing portion in our life. He made us that way.

God completes us and when we ask Him to be a part of our life, to complete us (to heal and to make us whole), then our joy is complete.
