Elementary Teaching 2

Milk Part 2

"Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith in God," Hebrews 6:1

Foundation

Whenever a house is built, the foundation is laid down first.

Jesus puts it like this: "I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.

He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." Luke 6:47-49

Both the Apostle Peter and Apostle Paul, wrote about Jesus being the chief cornerstone of the foundation of the Christian faith.

Jesus is the real Rock not Peter.

He is the One who and where we should build this new way of living on.

Our faith is not based on the high priest, not on the pastor, not on the preacher, not on the minister, not on a missionary, not on the pope, not even on Peter, Paul or Mary.

In Acts 10:26, when Cornelius fell at the feet of Peter in reverence to him, Peter immediately made him get up. And he told him to stand up as he was only a man himself, like everyone else.

No Other One is Worthy

Yes, for everyone makes mistakes, Peter knows this fully well -- well everyone, except the chief cornerstone, the only one who our faith should be based on.

Jesus said in John 14, "If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well" -- our Father in heaven, the God of the universe, the Creator, the Prime Mover.

Dead Works

If we build it on someone else then this new faith will cause us grief. Our new found faith is not built on tradition, rituals or works of charity. These are dead works. This is how the Hebrews used to do it before Jesus came around. But the Prophet Isaiah and the Apostle Paul said that these works are but filthy rags in the sight of God.

And this is the faith that saves, not our works of righteousness.

Paul writes it this way:

"That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone.

God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation.

Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home." Ephesians 2:19-22 (MSG)

Amazing, once you get it and when you really think about it.
