His Work Was Done

The Ascension

"So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.” Acts 1:6-11

Following Jesus telling His closest followers not to leave Jerusalem because of the gift that was promised them will about to be given to them, Jesus then told them more about this gift of the Holy Spirit.

Taken Up

After telling them this, Jesus' work here on earth was finally over.

So He was taken up to heaven after having appeared to more than 500 people at different times for a period of 40 days following His resurrection.

There is another promise that He have told them that He will come back again. And the day and the hour no one knows.

Matthew wrote about it this way, Jesus speaking to them: "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man."

Yet the business at hand for them, His closest disciples was to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit who will be given to them, but not until some waiting.
