The Promise

The Holy Spirit at Pentecost

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language."
Acts 2:1-6

About 10 days after the Ascencion of Jesus when He was taken up to heaven, the promised Helper, Comforter, Advocate -- the Holy Spirit was finally given to the closest followers of Jesus on the day of Pentecost, as we read in the passage above.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Living God. When He came, there were physical manifestations. They heard Him and felt Him (wind), seen Him (fire), and the Spirit gave them the capacity to do something they couldn't do themselves (speak in other tongues).

Birth of the Church

When the work of Jesus was done. He had to be taken away, so the Promise could be given to them. Now that the Spirit has been given, the church was born.

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to  the early believers in Corinth reminded them that they themselves are God’s temple because God’s Spirit dwells in them.

Thus this temple of God, His church was born on Pentecost.

When we continue reading the Book of Acts we will get to know more about these acts that was done by the Holy Spirit through the Apostles during the inception of the church.
