Do Not Worry

Nervous Nellie

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34

We are back to talking about another small portion of what is now known as the Sermon on the Mount.

Sermon on the Mount Series:
Part 1 - Judging
Part 2 - Giving

If you need a little background, you can read those first.

Willing Audience

As you should already know by now, those people who Jesus preached this sermon to, were all there on their own accord.

They weren't forced or paid or have an ulterior motive for being there. (Except for the stalkers and paparazzis who were following Jesus around, but that is not the topic of this series).

Listening To Things They Normally Wouldn't Want To Listen To

And as already mentioned, these people who Jesus preached to, seemed to have an appetite for getting emotionally hurt. I mean why listen to Jesus preach when He would be telling you about the bad things that you do?

But these people they want to hear Him speak these truths to them. They actually follow Him around, waiting for Him to tell them stories, answer their questions and just speak about everyday things.

They went up a mountain just to follow Him. And for Jesus, He knew this was the crowd of people to whom He would share this long sermon to.

Why Worry

And the portion of the sermon as we read above was about worrying, or about why do we worry?

Why be a Worry Wart or a Nervous Nellie?

He went on and on, to make His point that worrying will not get them any where.

And it won't. In fact, it is counter productive.

Instead, what Jesus wanted them to do, was exactly what they were doing -- giving their time and their attention to the things of God, to what God is doing at the moment, at the here and now. And to be not caught up and worse not get worked up about what may or may not happen the next day, next week, next month or next year.

Have you ever thought about the last time you worried about something only to find out that the thing you were worried about didn't take place or didn't happen as you thought it would? Yes, what a waste of your time and everything else.

The only thing that should be important for us is right now, we can deal with what happens in the future when its time comes.

Hakuna Matata?

"Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies."
Philippians 4:6-9
