Pandemic Preaching - Hope For the Hopeless

"I have given up all hope,
and I feel numb all over.

I remember to think about
the many things
you did in years gone by.

Then I lift my hands in prayer,
because my soul is a desert,
    thirsty for water from you.

Please hurry, Lord,
and answer my prayer.
    I feel hopeless.
    Don’t turn away
and leave me here to die.

Each morning let me learn
more about your love
    because I trust you.
I come to you in prayer,
    asking for your guidance."

Psalm 143:4-8

This is the plea... the cry of no ordinary man. It was David's, while he was hiding out in a cave, all by himself. Yes the same David who once slayed the giant and who did so many other great and mighty things.

So unlike the usual lead actor of a classical make-believe movie, he wasn't immaculate, he wasn't superhuman.

He didn't always have it all together. He didn't always have all the right moves. Like us, he got scared, terrified even.

And yes, he made a lot of mistakes. And he was humiliated for them. He was human. He wasn't perfect, just like everyone else.

This passage in the New Living Tanslation, he said:

"Don’t put your servant on trial,
for no one is innocent before you...

I am losing all hope;
    I am paralyzed with fear...

Come quickly, Lord, and answer me,
    for my depression deepens.
Don’t turn away from me,
    or I will die."

Depressed

We can see he felt hopeless. He was in a state of depression.

But he wasn't about to give up. He was alone, yes. He was wretched, miserable, forlorn, dejected but not without help. He cried out to His heavenly Father, the same way he praised Him during the highest points of his life, unapologetic, unashamed, without reservation.

And that was why God called him, the man after His (God's) own heart.

If this mighty warrior, the One who stood up for God when no one from his own people did, and singlehandly faced the giant who terrorized his people... if he cried unashamely and oh so desperately for God because he was so broken, so afraid, so hopeless, what about us?

Desperate Times

Today, why can't we be that hopeless? Why can't we be so overwhelmed with anxiety and worry or paralyzed with fear and pain to the point of depression and contemplating on our own death?

The answer is, we can.

We all can, not just because we are all in this uncertain times. But also because we all have our own personal things going on in our life. We almost 100% will be like David at his lowest point, be it physically, emotionally, mentally or all of the above. No one is exempt.

The question is, at these points, in our humiliation, will we humble ourselves to Him who could do the impossible and cry out to Him, the miracle worker?

So it is okay to hide in a cave (far away from anyone seeing us) and cry out in desperation to Him who can exceedingly do above all we can ask, think and imagine.
