Feeding the Sheep - Servanthood

"So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way."

Colossians 3:12-17

[This is the 2nd message of this series]

This series is born out of Our Lord's Call to Peter to not only feed His lambs but also to feed His sheep.

And as sheep, we can be very stubborn. That's who we are. And the Apostle Peter was the perfect person to relate with this. He was probably the most hard headed disciple. He was the most arrogant. He was the loudest, often saying things without giving it a second thought. He was the fastest to commit to something or brag that he would do things without thinking. But he was also the model for servant leaders as what Jesus was to His disciples and what His (found) sheep was to be.

Servant Leadership

As believers growing on to spiritual maturity, we are meant to grow into servant leaders like the apostles and the first believers as Jesus modeled it for them to follow.

We may and will trip and fall down, but like Peter, the Lord will lead us into repentance and when we do, Jesus will reinstate us.

Humility

After Peter denied Jesus three times, Jesus asked him:

(1) Do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

(2) Again Jesus said, “Simon (Peter) son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

(3) The third time he said to him, “Simon (Peter) son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

Sheep Becoming Shepherd

As sheep, we are eventually to be tending other sheep ourselves.

Right now we are in training. And there is so much to learn and we have to have the right mindset and attitude (besides humility, we should have compassion and have an attitude of thankfulness).

And soon we will be able to feed the next batch of lambs (new believers). And then we will be able to take care and feed the next batch of sheep, until the Lord takes us home.
