Wisdom - Blessing

"The blessing of the LORD brings [true] riches, And He adds no sorrow to it [for it comes as a blessing from God]."

Proverb 10:22 AMP

[This is the 10th message in this series]

In this series we are highlighting two-liner verses from the Book of Proverbs.

Couplets

Most of the Jewish Scriptures were meant to be sung. Many verses are poems that actually were and still are sang today. And these verses rhyme and follow poetic principles, and they are easier to memorize. [Song lyrics are easier to remember than paragraphs]

Each proverb verse contains two lines, hence it is known as a couplet or a poetic couplet. These two lines compliment or contrast each other.

Bite-Sized Nuggets of Wisdom

Each verse contains a nugget of God's wisdom. For this particular gem,  it is a reminder for us to realize that true blessing that comes from the Lord brings true riches -- riches not of this world.

Blessings that come from this world is not from the Lord. As the second line to the couplet tells us so: God's blessing, He adds no sorrow to it.

In other translations it says He adds no grief or no trouble to it.

Counterfeit Blessing

So many things in this world appear like a blessing, at least initially, but in the long run, they become sources of pain if not regret.

One of the easiest examples of this is winning the lottery. Most of all big lottery winners do not have a clue with what to do with the easy money. They eventually become broke after a period of time and end up with no friends or family. Or they become victims of scammers, bad investments or bad business decisions and lose everything.

A second is a whirlwind romance which resulted in marrying someone too quickly or with both parties marrying without really knowing the other person. Normally they would have received warnings from people who do know them, telling them to at least slow down and make sure before settling down (which they ignored). Many of these unions ended with regrets.

Another is accepting a job offer that on the outside may appear like an answer to a prayer. But only to find out in time, that nothing about the job was what they were praying for. Sometimes what looks like a blessing is nothing but an opportunity to be too stressed out, too over worked, and/or being kept away from what you were meant to do or be with. So remember not everything that looks like a blessing is one. (This includes a business venture).

A true blessing adds no sorrow.

God Does Not Need Our Help

So on another translation of this verse, it says it like this:

"God’s blessing makes life rich;
nothing we do can improve on God."

God is God, He doesn't need our help, if He is blessing us, there is nothing we can do or need to do, to receive or not receive that blessing.

His blessing is a gift, He lovingly gives it to us, we do not need to work hard or toil for it. And we certainly cannot top it with anything we can do.

When God has blessed us, it is a gift. We did not work for it and it will not lead us to be remorseful, sorrowful, grief-stricken or afflicted. He is a Good Father and He gives us, His children good gifts.
