Wisdom - A Different Fire

"When you run out of wood, the fire goes out;
when the gossip ends, the quarrel dies down."

Proverbs 26:20

[This is the 21st message in this series]

In this series we are highlighting two-liner verses from the Book of Proverbs.

Busybodies

Apostle Paul in one of his letters to the first church in the City of Thessalonica warned them like this:

"We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies."

In those days some people have quit working, assuming the Lord was coming back very soon (even though Jesus have said many times that no one knows the day or the hour of His return).

So with nothing to do, these people were doing things they ought not to be doing, like putting themselves in the middle of other people's business and gossipping about them.

They were supposed to be busy doing God's work and not doing these.

Nothing's Changed

Times haven't changed one bit after thousands of years. As the writer of this proverb and as Paul warned people in their time about gossips and quarrels, we can say the same thing in our day and time.

People are still starting fires with their tongues and with the things they do.

Fire Starter

In another version this couplet goes like this:

"For lack of wood the fire goes out,
and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases."

Normally Christ would want the fire of the Holy Spirit to start and to spread among His followers. But the fire that whisperers cause is another kind of fire -- the fire that burns people. They kill, steal and destroy people's reputation, their life.

Whisperers cause quarrels even if that is not their intentions.

God does not want disagreements, factions and disunity, especially within the Body of Christ.

Busybodies and gossips are one of the main causes of this type of fire -- a fire that's not from the Lord. Anyone doing so and spreading this kind of fire is doing the enemy's work. They should think why they are doing so and should change their ways.

The Lord is indeed coming back and let those who have ears, hear what He is saying.

The Parable of the Weeds

"Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was asleep, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and slipped away. When the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the weeds also appeared.

The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

'An enemy did this,’ he replied.

So the servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

'No,’ he said, ‘if you pull the weeds now, you might uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat into my barn.’”

If we keep playing with fire, we might just end up in eternity with what we are spewing, a place in the lake of fire.
