Wisdom - Equals

"The rich and poor have a common bond;
The Lord is the Maker of them all."

Proverbs 22:2

[This is the 19th message in this series]

In this series we are highlighting two-liner verses from the Book of Proverbs.

Commonality

There is only one race, the human race -- made in the image of God. This is why God looks at every human being the same way.

It does not matter how much or how little one has. God does not look at how much money one makes a year, it doesn't matter to Him what kind of profession one is in, God isn't looking at that or at age, gender, color, height, weight or place of birth.

Equal Opportunity

God calls everyone to repentance and to receive His gift of eternal life. He doesn't look at our past or our present condition. He does not see what has been done but rather what could we become.

We have talked about this in previous lessons in another series of messages. It is not right to label Christians as prejudiced, bigots, racists, sexists and such. Because the God they believe in is not.

Christians who walk with God, become more and more like Him. Christ is so much ahead of His time. He hung out with lepers, the blind, the deaf, people with disabilities, prostitutes, people of bad reputation, fishermen, men, women and children and people from all walks of life and people from different races.

Equals

In another version of this couplet it says:

"The rich and the poor shake hands as equals —
    God made them both!"

We are all God's creation, made in His likeness. We are all equal in His eyes even if we don't see it that way.

Remember that story Jesus talked about with that person who looked lowly on himself along with the other person who did the opposite:

I, I, I, I and I

"He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

God's Ways are Not Man's Ways

God does not look at us the same way we or other people do. If anything God looks at those who are less important as more important.

The Apostle Paul taught about this in a letter he wrote to the first church in the City of Corinth

"In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, while the more honorable parts do not require this special care."

As Christians, the more we walk with the Spirit of Christ, the more other people will see us more like Him.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ, He always points us to Christ. Christ loved and spoke with compassion towards sinners, the hurting, lowly people and with Samaritans (people who Jews look down on). He lovingly healed the sick and the afflicted. He cared for the poor, the widowed and the orphans. He didn't treat them lower than the rich and the powerful.

He, He, He and He
