Inconvenient Biblical Teaching - Jesus Didn't Say He Was God

' I and the Father are one.”

Again the Judean leaders picked up stones to stone Him.

Yeshua answered them, “I’ve shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone Me?”

The Judean leaders answered, “We aren’t stoning you for a good work, but for blasphemy. Though You are a man, You make Yourself God!” '

[11th message of the Why I Don't Believe Series]

[The Name Jesus in their language is Yeshua, the TLV uses Yeshua in place of Jesus]

The messages in this series discuss how some people who reject Christianity do so because they either cannot accept an inconvenient biblical teaching, or they have an irreconcilable stance against the teachings of Jesus the Christ, or they have found something they think is wrong with Christianity.

But Jesus Didn't Say He Was God?

We have heard some people swear that they are sure that Jesus didn't say He was God. They also contend that His disciples didn't believe He was God. And that men merely made Him God after His first disciples have long died out.

Selective Reading

Funny they do not believe anything else in the bible but they believe this. Funnier is they read and study a book they don't believe in more than some believers do.

So if Jesus isn't God and if He isn't who He claimed to be,  none of what He said and ever did, will make sense. The Jesus myth would have fizzled out like the stories of all others who claimed they were God.

Abba Father

Jesus was the first person to refer to the God of Creation as Father, His Father and reading from the excerpt above from the Book of John, Jesus did say:

"I and the Father are one", (He and God are one).

He Didn't?

Can these people still say that Jesus didn't say that He was God?

Even the religious leaders of His time said so themselves, that Jesus make Himself God. This is why they have accused Him of blasphemy.

Here is another instance of these people charging Him of blasphemy, as recorded in:

Luke 5:20-21

' And when he saw their faith, he (Jesus) said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” '

Jesus made it clear that He is God. And in the end, these Pharisees had Jesus sentenced to death because of blasphemy.

Matthew 26:64-66

Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” '

Prophesied

Jesus said and did things that made Him equal with God and these were the reasons why He was killed. And He did tell His disciples that He will die and that He will rise again in three days. And these came to pass. Mere men wouldn't say that, much less do so.

Everything He said and have done, all pointed to Him being God.

I Am

In another narrative written by John, He said this about Jesus:

John 8:58-59

' Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. '

Abraham was born almost two thousands years before the time of Jesus. Yet Jesus said, He was there before Abraham. Jesus said "I am", the Name God told Moses to tell Pharoah if he asked him what was God's Name.

He Did Say He is

Jesus did say, in so many words that He is God. And He proved it.

[He showed fishermen how to catch fish when they couldn't. Changed water to wine in a flash. Walked on water. Saved Peter from drowning when he tried to do the same. Calmed the storm and the raging sea. Fed thousands with a kids meal. Healed the sick and people with disabilities instantly. Brought Lazarus back from the dead. Forgave sins. Healed the demon possessed. Knew countless things before they happened and many things unknown. Predicted His death and resurrection. Came back from the dead. Ascended back to heaven. Put up with Peter, the Sons of Thunder, Doubting Thomas and Judas for three years. And He died for you and me.]
