Give Thanks

Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving thanks.

"Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."

Song of Thanksgiving

The Old Testament Book of Psalms is a collection of songs and prayers that are meant to be sung. Many of them are songs of praise, worship and thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving Week, as we give thanks to the things we treasure the most, let us take pause and ponder upon those we  may not have given much thought.

Let us filter our celebration with this song, the 100th Psalm. Let us take a look at what it might be trying to teach us today.

Song of Praise

Shout! When we are happy, we give out a shout -- a happy shout. We do not and could not keep quiet. We holler and we do so, full of joy, as we sing to and for the source of that joy.

Song of Worship

Worship! When we are happy, we gladly serve or give service, most especially to the one who is the author of this gladness. This service is our resonable act of worship -- it is not forced, coerced or performed out of fear or obligation.

Song of Entrance

Enter! When we are happy, we enter into a higher level, a kind of blissful euphoria. This can be because we have entered or are ushered in to God's presence. Our happy songs are the entrance ticket. God loves that we sing to and for Him. And He takes notice and listens.

This is the very reason, why people have written and sang love songs to those they have fallen in love with.

The Reasons Why

Most people need a reason for everything. We can't blame them, this world we live in is so cynical, cruel and full of doubts and fears and worries, that we need a reason for everything.

This song tells us that the Lord is God. He made the universe. He made us, and we are His. We are the sheep under His care.

It says that the Lord is good. His mercy endures forever. His faithfulness continues throughout every generation.

This song has survived thousands of years, through the ups and downs of those who have sang it. It has been passed down generations and today people still sing it, and compose new songs from it. This will continue on with or without us.

This train of thought is passing by us today. We are here, waiting at this train station, whether we get on board or not, is up to us.

With this to ponder upon, enjoy your celebrations and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones.
