Lent - Day 12

Other Parables

This is the 12th day of our Lenten study as we read through the gospel according to Mark.

Like we did yesterday, we will not start off with the passage but will be reading it below.

The reason for this is that again we will read parables and these are actually a continuation of yesterday"s parable reading.

I pray that you will continue with us in this 40 day journey as we read through the Book of Mark, and praying, fasting and abstaining from temporal things at least on these 40 days.

Here is the passage for today:

The Seed Growing Secretly

"Jesus also said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed on the ground. Night and day he sleeps and wakes, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he knows not how. All by itself the earth produces a crop—first the stalk, then the head, then grain that ripens within. And as soon as the grain is ripe, he swings the sickle, because the harvest has come. ”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

Then He asked, “To what can we compare the kingdom of God? With what parable shall we present it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds sown upon the earth. But after it is planted, it grows to be the largest of all garden plants and puts forth great branches, so that the birds of the air nest in its shade.”

With many such parables Jesus spoke the word to them, to the extent that they could understand. He did not say anything to them without a parable. But privately He explained everything to His own disciples"
Mark 4:26-34

Again, like yesrerday the illustrations of Jesus and His metaphors are about seeds so as the listeners at that time can relate.

Parable of the Viral Video

Today, we could make new parables and say that the Kingdom of God is like a friend who took a video of you while you were singing or dancing. Later on your friend posted this video on Youtube.

Both of you forgot about it, went home and called it a night. In the morning, your friend messaged you to say that you have 10 views and sends you the link to the video.

Each day you click on the link and interact with those watching and leaving messages. The view count climbs and in a month, you have reached over a thousand views. In the next three months you've reach over 10,000. In two more months the video has gone viral and in 10 months it has over a million views, thousands of comments and is being shared hundreds of times a day.

This is how it is with the Word of God, it starts with someone sharing it and in time it has circled the globe and has reached the ends of the world. And then the end will come.
