Lent - Day 6

The Lord of the Sabbath

"One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain as they walked along. So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”

Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Ma
n is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:23-28

Moving along our Lenten study with reading through the Book of Mark, we read that the Pharisees were once again stalking Jesus.

They found another fault with Jesus and they questioned Him about it.

Not sure why they want to look foolish again as Jesus has always responded masterfully every time they questioned Him.

But I guess their motto was try and try until they die. Or at least close to it. I can't see how with all their study and attention to following God, they just couldn't recognize Him when He was face to face with them -- blind guides as they are.

Calling Out

Normally Jesus was being questioned for what He was doing or saying. But as in other instances they were questioning Him for what His followers are doing.

And many times the question is regarding an "infraction" on the Sabbath.

And this time, maybe so that may be no more doubt, aside from citing an example in the past, from King David's no less (when He and his men did something "unlawful" which of course they should be very much aware of), He categorically said that the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath -- almost like telling them to stop it with these questions already.

The New Normal

Anyway, we shall see that the stalking, the questioning and the scheming will go on and would be a normal, everyday thing for Jesus.

We will continue this 40 day Lenten journey and pray you will join us and continue with reading the Book of Mark, praying, fasting and abstaining from things that would have used your time otherwise. This is Day 6.
