Lent - Day 7

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

"Once again Jesus entered the synagogue, and a man with a withered hand was there. In order to accuse Jesus, they were watching to see if He would heal on the Sabbath.

Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand up among us.” And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

But they were silent.

Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored.

At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus." Mark 3:1-6

We are back with our Lenten study with our reading of the Book of Mark. Today looks like a repeat of yesterday's.

Sabbath

But this happened on another Sabbath and we read that the Pharisees were once again "watching" Jesus on that day. -- the original Paparazzis.

And of course, they were waiting for the opportunity to find fault with Jesus.

Jesus already knew the drill and He asked them a question.

Silence

He asked them, “which is lawful on the Sabbath -- knowing that they made up so many man made rules and regulations, especially for the Sabbath.

He continued: "to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” -- silencing His detractors.

Calling Out

Normally Jesus was the one being questioned, this time, He jumped the gun on them.

Yes, and crickets.

And then to top it off, He backed up His claim that the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath.

Rage

Instead of believing in the truth of what they have just witnessed, the religious leaders maintained in their unbelief and in their position of not being able to "see" the truth, even if He was right there in front of them.

This also made them, the Pharisees, so full of rage, that when they left they conspired with their Roman leaders to kill Jesus.

The New Normal

The new normal has now taken a wicked turn and it started with Jesus doing something good.

"Stretch out your hand"

We will continue this 40 day Lenten journey and pray you will continue reading with us through the Book of Mark, praying, fasting and abstaining from things that would have used your time otherwise. This is Day 7.
