Lent - Day 9

The Twelve Apostles

"Then Jesus went up on the mountain and called for those He wanted, and they came to Him. He appointed twelve of them, whom He designated as apostles, to accompany Him, to be sent out to preach, and to have authority to drive out demons.

These are the twelve He appointed: Simon (whom He named Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (whom He named Boanerges, meaning “Sons of Thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus."
Mark 3:13-19

Continuing with our Lenten study by reading through the Book of Mark, we read that Jesus just promoted 12 of His followers.

Apostles

These 12 will now become clones of Jesus, doing the same thing He is doing -- preaching (teaching), healing and driving out demonic spirits.

This would definitely be a new headache for the religious leaders who were conspiring and scheming to stop Jesus.

Now they not only have worry about Jesus and the multitude of people around Him but also otherz who will essentially be like Him.

The New Normal

These 12 were: Peter and his business partners the brothers James and John, sons of Zebedee, Andrew, (Peter's brother), Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew (Levi the tax collector who will become one of the four gospel writers), Thomas, another James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot (the one who will betray Jesus).

We will get to know more about them in the days to come.

If Judas and the rest of this motley crew can be included on the group, then you and me can be included in our version of modern day apostles -- believers and followers who are sent out to the world to do what Jesus did; Mini-mes, Little Christs, Christians, Ambassadors of God.

And it starts with being with Him daily, reading the Word, listening to the Holy Spirit and praying to Our Father in heaven.

We will continue this 40 day Lenten journey, and I pray that you will continue with us through the Book of Mark, praying, fasting and abstaining from activities that by now you would have taken out of your daily routine.
