40 Days After the Resurrection - Part 6

Jesus Appears to Thomas

"Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my
finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”

Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
John 20:24-29

Continuing our reading from the Book of John. This passage was after the resurrected Jesus had already appeared to His disciples as they were sheltering in place.

But because one of them was not there during that time, he did not believe them even if they probably told him a dozen times.

Thomas told them, no he will not believe until he too has seen with his own eyes and not only that, until he has seen the nail pierced hands and have touched the wound on Jesus' side.

What did Jesus do?

He came and appeared to Thomas just for that very purpose.

And He told him, to look and to do what he have to do. And then to stop doubting and to start believing.

And Thomas did. But only because he saw with his very own eyes.

To which Jesus reminded him, because you have seen Me, you have believed, but blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

And those would be all of us who believe, all those before us and all those who will yet believe.

This single event made Thomas believe. There are other moments like this during a period of 40 days and one, a combination or all of them totally convinced all those early believers.

As we continue to read their eye witness accounts, we too might also understand why they spent the remainder of their lives spreading the good news about Jesus of Nazareth.
