40 Days After the Resurrection - Part 7

Jesus Appears by the Sea of Tiberias

"Later, by the Sea of Tiberias,a Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made Himself known in this way: Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. Simon Peter told them, “I am going fishing.”

“We will go with you,” they said. So they went out and got into the boat, but caught nothing that night.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus. So He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it there, and they were unable to haul it in because of the great number of fish.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it) and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came ashore in the boat. They dragged in the net full of fish, for they were not far from land, only about a hundred yards."
John 21:1-8

Continuing with our study of the accounts of the risen Christ, we read that the Apostle John (who scholars believe is person he refers to when he writes about the disciple who Jesus loves).

In this written eye witness account, the resurrected Christ appeared to seven of His disciples. All of whom went back to fishing (fish) after Jesus died.

But like the first time Jesus called Peter to come join Him, Peter also caught nothing. There were no fish.

Peter probably forgot that when Jesus first called him, He said He will make them fishers of men.

Anyway, again like the first time, Jesus told them to let down their net at the "right side" and when they did, like the first time, their boats almost sunk because of the enormous amount of fish that they caught.

Let us continue reading John's narrative of that day:

"When they landed, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus told them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn.

“Come, have breakfast,” Jesus said to them. None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and He did the same with the fish.

This was now the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after He was raised from the dead."
John 21:9-14

The first time this happened to Peter, he went to Jesus, fell on His knee and he told him to stay away from him as he does not deserve him for he was a sinful man.

This time Peter brought Jesus some of the fish they caught and they broke bread (they ate) together. They had breakfast.

This is actually the first time I have read that they ate breakfast with Jesus. Although they have eaten numerous times with Jesus, typically it was during the middle of the day, or the end of the day.

Not really sure what I am getting at here, but all I'm saying is this a first. A first time to "break" their fast. I am guessing that they were indeed fasting after Jesus died. And as I remember Jesus said that His disciples do not fast because He was with them still. But they would, when He is taken away.

Now He has resurrected and is back with them, so yes it was time for some breakfast.
