Lent - 29th Day

Teachings about Divorce

"Then Jesus left that place and went into the region of Judea, beyond the Jordan. Again the crowds came to Him and He taught them, as was His custom.

Some Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” they inquired.

“What did Moses command you?” He replied.

They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

But Jesus told them, “Moses wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart. However, from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” Mark 10:1-9

Continuing our 40 Day Lenten study as we read through the Book of Mark, we come to a passage that deals with divorce and marriage.

If you reread it again, it should be self-explanatory. But because we all did not grow up in the same family or have not been raised up the same way, we obviously do not see things the same way.

Christians and Jews view marriage as one that is instituted by God and is one between a man and a woman. Marriage plays a big part of the Christian view of salvation. We have already touched on this issue previously, and will not get into it today.

If we respect that different people have different beliefs, then, we should at the very least acknowledge this about the Christian belief and just try to understand the way they look at things from their point of view or where they are coming from. Some might think they are wrong but they have that right like everyone else because of  their religious beliefs.

Respect is a little harder to come by, as some would argue that it should be earned. So we are not even asking for that, even though most people would more likely to respect the beliefs of another faith over those of Christians (and Jews) and wouldn't dare risk even questioning the beliefs of other religions.

Double standard, animosity, bias whatever it is, it's all part of the way we were brought up, our background, media, peer pressure and everything around us.

But at least reading the bible and getting to know more about Christ is one way we will get to know Christians.

We will continue this Lenten series and we pray that you will continue to join with us, as we to get to know Christ, spend quiet time with Him, praying and fasting. And let us finish this 40 day journey together. Shalom.
