Lent - Day 38

The Death of Jesus

"From the sixth hour until the ninth hourf darkness came over all the land. At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.”

And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”

But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Mark 15:33-39

On these last three days of our 40 Day Lenten study, we will continue reading the things that happened during that first Holy Week as we read through the Book of Mark.

In the passage above, the plot of the paparazzis to kill Jesus was completed. This was recorded by all the gospel writers (in Matthew 27:45-56, Luke 23:44-49, John 19:28-30).

It was also prophesied in the 22nd Psalm, which Jesus uttered while He was hanging on the tree (cross) despised and rejected, bearing the guilt and shame and the weight of humanity.

In the end the centurion (a Roman commander of a small army unit) stated truly this is the Son of God (Bar Abba).

If we did our own private reading (which we should as we skipped through several passages) we would have read that before Pilate handed Jesus of Nazareth to be executed, he had the people choose between two "criminals" -- Barabbas or Bar Abba (the One without sin); son of the Father or Son of the Father (Only Begotten Son). Us or Jesus of Nazareth (Son of Promise). Us or the Messiah (Anointed One). Us or the Savior of the World (Jesus Christ).

Indeed, everything was done, all things have worked together so that Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God would take our place (the chidren of God) as the atonement for our crimes (sins of commission and omission). Thereby ensuring our freedom by paying the penalty and the ransom for our captivity.

It is for freedom that we were set free. The wages of sin has been paid. Jesus has conquered death. Everlasting life is ours once again, as was in the beginning which was lost through Adam and Eve.

We will continue to learn about all these as we continue reading the Book of Mark. Join us again tomorrow as we continue this journey together. Shalom.
