Lent - Day 39

The Burial of Jesus

"Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.

Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so. When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was laid."
Mark 15:42-47

There are only two more days left on our 40 Day Lenten study, as we continue reading the events that happened during that first Holy Week, from the Book of Mark.

The things that was written in the passage above happened on the evening of that fateful first Good Friday. I am not sure if there was actually anything written down that happened that first Black Saturday. And for good reason as Saturday is their day of rest, their Sabbath and they do nothing on that day.

It would even be more so on that particular Saturday as Jesus lay in a tomb along with their hopes and dreams. All the other gospel writers have written about this (Matthew 27:57-61, Luke 23:50-56, John 19:38-42). All of which was foretold by the Prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 53:9-12.

Although as the enemies of Jesus rejoice and those who put their trust in Him grieve, fearful and afraid and trying to make sense of what has happened. Psalm 30 has the promise for that

weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.

We will learn more about this as we finish reading the Book of Mark tomorrow on day 40 of this 40 day journey. Join us one again. Shalom.
