First Church

Acts 2 Church

The Fellowship of Believers

"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.

All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need.

With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."
Acts 2:42-47

As we have read above, the Book of Acts written by an eye-witness, the Evangelist Luke is a record of what the first church was all about.

He wrote this record and the Book of Luke for a person named Theophilus and these books have been preserved, translated to different languages and passed down through generations.

These are ten things you might have noticed from the narrative above.

1. The first church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching (sermons). The apostles were with Jesus during His three year earthly ministry. They would have a lot to share.

2. They came together in fellowship (meeting together).

3. They came together for breaking bread (eating together).

4. They came together for prayer.

5. The apostles performed many signs and wonders and a sense of awe came over everyone (they did the miraculous and everyone revered them).

6. All the believers were together and had everything in common.

7. They sold their possessions and goods and they shared with anyone who were in need (everyone became one family).

8. They were in one accord and they continued to meet daily in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house and sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart (they met in the temple courts and in their homes). They were all in one spirit.

9. They praised God and enjoyed the favor of all the people.

10. And the Lord added to their number daily, those who were being saved.

Church was both so much different and simple back then -- practical and real.
