Building Smartly

The House on the Rock

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock." Matthew 7:24-25

We are back to talking about another small portion of what is now known as the Sermon on the Mount.

This will be the fourth in this series.

By this time you would have already known the back story to this sermon, if not then you just have to read the first three parts of this series first.

If you are ready to dive into the topic at hand, then let us continue.

Fixer Upper

This part of the sermon is actually something along the lines of what Jesus would have actually done for a living.

From what we have been taught, Jesus would have been a carpenter by trade. But He would probably would have worked as a construction worker as a living. Anyway, He would have been someone who would known more than a thing or two about building and fixing houses, as well as household furniture.

The picture that Jesus is trying to paint here is the need to fix a house so that it will serve its purpose.

Hearing and Doing

Here Jesus is telling His avid listeners that merely listening to Him is not enough. After listening to Him and upon returning back home, they would need to fix what is wrong with their life, just like fixing what might be wrong with their house.

Right Foundation

The premise though is that their house, like their life should be built on solid rock. They should not have built it on top of silt, sand or clay.

It is the same with how they live their life, it should be that their life should be built upon Jesus, the Rock Eternal.

Trials and Tribulation

Here Jesus is alluding that storms, floods, trials and tribulations will come -- it is not if they come, but when. It is a given. But a house built on solid foundation will not be swept away, like a person who has put His trust on the truths that Jesus have said, hearing it and putting them to use.

Wise is that person.

"These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock." Matthew 7:24-25 MSG
