Gospel - From the Eyes of John

"From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in—we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us.

We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy!"

-The Apostle John, writing to the first believers, 1st century
1 John 1:1-4 in The Message Paraphrase Version

[This is the 1st message in this series]

The gospels were written eye-witness accounts of John, Mark, Matthew and Luke --  contemporaries of Jesus of Nazareth.

Of the four, John was one of a three (him, his brother James and Peter) who was with Jesus every single day during Jesus' three year teaching ministry on earth.  There were others with them but at certain occasions Jesus would only take John, James and Peter to accompany Him.

1st Century

The Gospel was set during the time when Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth. John along with a rag tag team of hand selected people, criss crossed the Judean countryside along with Jesus as He taught them, ate with them, prayed with them, and was with them almost 24/7 for over three years, as He was teaching people all around them about the Kingdom of God.

John wrote about these three years he spent with Jesus after he took that sabbatical leave to leave behind his fishing business (he and his brother James were business partners with Peter and his brother Andrew). They left their families and everything else to spend over three years to obtain a degree in the school of Jesus (see Book of John) and then the rest of their lives to attend the school of the Holy Spirit (see Book of Acts).

John also wrote three letters to the first believers in the first century, some of them would have also seen and heard Jesus preach, but certainly many more of them only heard about Jesus. In these letters, John was explaining the gospel of the Kingdom of God. These letters are known as First John, Second John and Third John.

In this series of lessons we will go through what John was telling these first Christians.
