Gospel - Greater Testimony

"And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. So we have these three witnesses— the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree. Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son."
-The Apostle John, writing to the first believers, 1st century
1 John 5:6-9 in the New Living Translation Version

[This is the 5th message in this series]

We shall continue with the first letter of John addressed to the second generation as well as to us, all succeeding generations of believers.

We are continuing on with John telling more about the Gospel.

In the excerpt above, John is instructing the new batch of believers that Jesus, the Christ -- the Messiah, the Son of Man (and the Son of God) is who He said He is. And He backed this up with proofs.

Humankind believe human testimony, for example those given in oath by witnesses in a court of law.

But when it comes to Jesus, it wasn't just people who testified, God Himself testified that what Jesus was saying is true and backed it up with demonstrations of heavenly (Godly) power. But people still will not believe.

To See is to Believe

Most people will not believe in God or in Jesus. And the reality is most of them don't really know what it will take for them to believe.

After Jesus was baptized (in water) in the Jordan River by John the Baptist (this John is a different John from the one who wrote these letters and the Book of John), the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove upon Him and a voice from the heavens said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased!”

This is when the Three Persons of God was revealed, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

More Testimonies

Throughout the earthly  ministry of Jesus, there were other things which testified to Him being the Messiah (the Christ, the Savior of the world) -- through the prophesies that were fulfilled, through the miraculous signs He did and through His death and resurrection.

Believe and Be Saved

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” this is the response Paul gave to the jailer when he asked him how can he be saved.

This is the Gospel message and the letters of John to the believers in the 1st century were written and preserved so as all succeeding generations of believers will also understand and believe the gospel. This goes the same for the letters written by Peter, James, Jude and Paul.
