Everyday Wisdom - Fall

Wisdom’s Blessings Come from the Lord

"The plans of the heart belong to humans,
but an answer on the tongue comes from the Lord.

A person thinks all his ways are pure,
    but the Lord weighs motives."

Proverbs 16:1-2

The bible contains a book called Proverbs. It contains 31 Chapters consisting a total of about a thousand "words of wisdom".

It has been widely recommended that we read one chapter of Proverbs a day for a month, repeating every month. One can actually read Chapter 1 on the first of the month and reading daily, will have enough chapters until the 31st day.

Each chapter has 20 to 30 two-liners, each one is like a mini poetic sermon.

The passage above are the first two mini-sermons of Chapter 16.

And this chapter actually contains 33 of this two-liners and none weighter than verse 18:

"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

Fallen

This verse literally describes what happened to the fallen angel, we call Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12-16) or Satan.

Now what happens to many believers is that perhaps they think it applies only to the adversary, the devil and it does not apply to them, blindly believing that they are not as bad as Satan or worse that they are above other people (Pharisee-thinking).

But this is exactly the same thinking that befell the once beautiful and gifted Lucifer, yes up in heaven before the fall.

No One is Immune

But no, like all other proverbs, Proverbs 16:18 is for all of us. First when Jesus died for us and second, everytime we think it doesn't apply to us anymore.

It is For Me

The trick is when one reads these two-liners is to read it as it applies to themselves (no not to others, they can do their own private reading).

So how to best read it? Find a quiet place, preferably in the early hours of the day when you first wake up. Thank the Lord for another new day. Sing psalms, hymns or songs to the Lord. Or listen to worship music. Talk to the Lord, don't rush, wait upon Him, wake up earlier if you find yourself rushing and then read His Word.

It Was For Me

Read proverbs like it was written just for you. And then weep.

God is so merciful. His Son suffered and died for me. He died for my pride so that I will not have to fall. He died for my sins, my hidden sins, my past, my hidden motives, the plans in my heart, the words I have spoken even the unclean thoughts in my head. Yes, He did.

And yes we weep and we say thank you Lord. That verse was for me and thank you that I've felt your amazing love for me once again. It's time to start my day. Lord guard my heart. Check my motives. Direct my path. Show me the plans you have for me and guide me through them.

Come wake me from my sleep
